8/10/2023 0 Comments Iaido sword draw stance![]() ![]() Handling a real sword in a circumstance of imagined combat forces the practitioner to remain entirely "in the moment," concentrating full attention to detail and proper form. ![]() Today, it is mostly practiced as a method of self-perfection and moving meditation. Iaido is sometimes translated as "the art of mental presence and immediate reaction." Though theoretically a combative martial art, conventions and adaptations to modern life have increasingly drawn Iaido away from realism. No formal rank is awarded in these arts, but proficiency is included in assessment of rank in Kobudo (weaponry arts). ![]() These include Iaido (the art of drawing the sword from the scabbard), Kenjitsu (the art of using the sword in combat), and Kendo (the competitive art of Japanese sword fighting using a bamboo sword). The Shorin-ryu Karatedo and Kobudo Association of America (SKKAA) incorporates the Japanese sword arts at the black belt level. ![]()
